Competent: 4-7 Days

Honshu only, no ferry. Tokyo to Sendai, Lake Towada, Hachimantai, Zao, the Bandai-Azuma Skyline and Nikko's hairpins. The best foliage roads in Japan as a standalone loop.

Advanced: 7-9 Days

Ferry across the Tsugaru Strait into Hokkaido: Lake Shikotsu, Asahidake, and Niseko as the turnaround. Then home to Tokyo on a different set of roads.

Boss: 14-21 Days

The whole loop, unrushed. All five chapters, two to three nights in wild Shiretoko, and the Cape Soya bonus run if you have the days.
